Pawi Recovery Plan
Joining to save the Pawi
In 2010 a diverse mixture of community groups, national and international NGOs, local governmental organizations, hunters, conservationists and researchers met at the Caroni Bird Sanctuary in order to form a collective plan to bring the Pawi back from the brink of extinction. Information about the Pawi and known threats to its survival were shared among the various groups and a vision, mission, goals and actions were developed.

After the meeting, these were further fine-tuned and organized into a Pawi Species Recovery Plan that is the collaborative effort of the major players in Pawi conservation.

Due to several mishaps, including a small fire at one of the intended venues (where thankfully no on was hurt), the launch of this plan was put off until the 9th August 2012 when the group came together again at the University of the West Indies. Here they were introduced to the final Pawi Species Recovery Plan and made plans for moving forward.

The Recovery Plan
In summary, the plan is a tool to take us from our current position in which we lack sufficient knowledge of the species, appropriate protection mechanisms and necessary resources to a future in which "the people of Trinidad and Tobago feel a great sense of pride in our Pawi, which will be non-threatened and will flourish in sustainable populations throughout its original range benefiting local, national and international communities." The Plan includes key actions in the areas of scientific research, management, policy and laws, co-ordination of the main Pawi stakeholders, increasing rural livelihood options that promote Pawi conservation, private sector involvement and awareness raising.

The groups will be meeting in September 2012 to work on defining a coordinating body which would help to co-ordinate efforts in Pawi conservation. There was also agreement from all groups to provide information on their past and on-going Pawi conservation projects/actions to give us a better understanding of what has been done so we have a better idea of how to proceed.

It was great to see the support and enthusiasm of the groups involved and we expect this to continue as we move forward in the implementation of the Pawi Species Recovery Plan. You can view a copy of the plan here or see a presentation summarizing the plan on our youtube channel.

Become part of the Plan
We invite you to read though our website to learn more about the Pawi, how you can become involved and maybe even share information on your own Pawi encounters. It is our hope that this Plan can help to guide all interested groups and individuals to create a better future for the Pawi and its forest home.
