Welcome to the Pawi Study Group website

The Pawi Study Group is a Trinidad and Tobago NGO which was created in 2004 to promote the recovery of the critically endangered, endemic (only found here) Pawi or Trinidad Piping-guan. Our main focus has been on scientific field studies which have been providing information to guide conservation efforts but we are also involved in public awareness, local capacity building and the creation of a Species Recovery Plan for the Pawi.

What is a Pawi and why does it need our help?

The Pawi (Pipile pipile) is our only large, fruit-eating bird and it plays an important role in seed dispersal in our forests which is essential to forest biodiveristy and health. Although it has close relatives in South America, this species is endemic to (found only in) Trinidad. As they can be found nowhere else on Earth, many avid birders come to Trinidad just to take a look at this rare and special animal.

Through over hunting and habitat loss it is now listed as critically endangered by the IUCN, with less than 200 Pawi on the planet. For this reason the Pawi Study Group, along with other concerned individuals and organizations, are working to help protect these birds and the habitat they live in. To learn more about the Pawi visit our Pawi Page, to look at our work visit our Projects and Activities  and News pages and to see how you can join in visit our How You Can Help page.
